Koki Kobayashi, one of the rebels in the Liberal-Democratic Party, and three other party members formed a new party Aug. 21 with Yasuo Tanaka, the governor of Nagano Prefecture, taking the top position.
"We, the members of New Party Nippon, gathered here with ambitions to save Japan, protect the people and change the bureaucracy of the Kasumigaseki district," Tanaka said.
The five-member party, named New Party Nippon, is the second formed by dissident LDP members since the Lower House was dissolved after postal privatization was voted down Aug. 8.
With only four Diet members, New Party Nippon fell one short of legal recognition as a political party. But on Aug. 24, a member of the other newly formed party, Tamisuke Watanuki's Kokumin Shinto, left the party and joined New Party Nippon to fulfill the requirement. As a result, its candidates can run in both single-seat and proportional blocks.
