Prosecutors indicted a top executive of the state-run highway body Aug. 15, widening the probe into the country's largest public works bid-rigging scandal.
Prosecutors indicted Michio Uchida, 60, the vice president of Japan Highway Public Corp., in connection with the alleged bid-rigging for bridge construction projects ordered by the highway body, prosecutors said in a statement.
Uchida, who was arrested in mid-July, is the second JH executive to be indicted in the scandal. Prosecutors indicted former JH board member Sozo Kanda, who later landed a job at a major construction firm, after charges were filed against 26 Japanese companies and eight executives for allegedly colluding to divvy up 180 contracts worth a total of ¥71 billion in fiscal 2003 and 2004.
