School attacker given 3-year term
The Kyoto District Court on Aug. 8 sentenced a man with a history of mental problems to three years in prison for a murder attempt at an elementary school in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, in 2003.
The focus of the trial for Nobuyuki Shirai, 47, had been on whether he was mentally competent enough to take responsibility for his crime, since a psychiatric test conducted during the trial diagnosed him with serious schizophrenia.
The ruling said that while Shirai was competent, he had diminished capacity as he was suffering from schizophrenia when he entered the school and attacked two first-grade boys with a knife Dec. 18, 2003. The boys sustained minor injuries.
While prosecutors had demanded a 10-year prison term, the defense lawyers argued he was innocent as he was either insane or feeble-minded at the time of the crime.
