The number of visitors to the World Exposition in Aichi Prefecture passed the 10 million mark July 4, two-thirds of the attendance target set by organizers just half way through the six-month event, the Japan Association for World Exposition 2005 said.
As part of celebrations, a lucky visitor chosen by lottery won a 2-carat diamond from the Russian republic of Sakha, from where the expo's feature exhibit -- a frozen Siberian mammoth -- was excavated.
Despite the rain July 4, about 16,000 people were in line when the gates opened at 9 a.m. The total number of visitors since the expo opened March 25 reached 10,008,105 at 10:45 a.m., exceeding the 10 million milestone on the 102nd day of the fair and earlier than organizers had expected.
