Arcades to bar teens from 7 p.m.
The Osaka Prefectural Government plans to bar people aged under 16 from entering karaoke boxes, video arcades and other entertainment premises after 7 p.m. starting next spring, prefectural officials said June 10.
If the ordinance revision is passed, it would represent the earliest ban of its kind in Japan.
Similar official regulations exist in 32 other prefectures, but the ban takes effect at either 10 p.m. or 11 p.m., according to the officials.
Fines would be imposed on owners of establishments that violate the new rule, they said.
The ban would be in force from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. for those younger than 16, while it would be in effect from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for those under 18, according to the officials.
The ordinance would also ban people from hiring those aged under 18 as employees of sex entertainment establishments, or from soliciting them as customers.
Legislation to revise the ordinance on the healthy growth of youths will be presented to the prefectural assembly in September.
