NPA to get prison-release data
The Justice Ministry will begin notifying the National Police Agency in September of the prison entry and release dates of any individuals convicted of a crime on a list of about 20 offenses, government officials said May 20.
National Public Safety Commission Chairman Yoshitaka Murata and Justice Minister Chieko Nono unveiled the plan at a Cabinet meeting, according to the officials.
The crimes, which are believed to be commonly repeated by offenders, include murder, robbery and drug-related offenses, and about 23,000 prisoners a year are expected to be subject to the measure, the officials said.
Calls for information sharing between the Justice Ministry and police increased after the November murder of a 7-year-old girl in Nara Prefecture.
The man arrested in the slaying has a record of sexually assaulting young girls.
