Heads roll over JAL safety problems
Katsuo Haneda, president of Japan Airlines International Co., will be demoted to vice president to take the blame for a series of mishaps resulting from lax safety controls, its holding company said March 17.
The decision came after the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Ministry reprimanded the executives of the holding company, Japan Airlines Corp., over three aviation law irregularities committed by Japan Airlines International:
・A jumbo cargo aircraft had been using the wrong wheel parts for more than eight years.
・A passenger plane flew to New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido from Haneda airport in Tokyo with an inactive emergency escape chute.
・A plane bound for Narita airport entered the wrong runway at Inchon airport in South Korea when it was preparing for takeoff.
The ministry issued an administrative warning to Japan Airlines Domestic Co. on March 17 over a plane that tried to takeoff at New Chitose in January before receiving clearance from the control tower.
Hidekazu Nishizuka, vice president of JAL International, will be demoted to senior managing director and Takenori Matsumoto, senior managing director of JAL International, will be demoted to managing director, said Isao Kaneko, chairman and chief executive officer of Japan Airlines, who will step down as CEO two months earlier than planned, in April.
