Former pro windsurfer dies

Former professional windsurfer Natsuki Iijima, who wrote a novel inspired by his fight against cancer, died from the illness Feb. 28 in his house in Honolulu, his publicist in Japan said. He was 38.
Iijima became a pro windsurfer in 1988 and made a name for himself at the World Cup and other international competitions in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was told he had liver cell cancer in 2002.
Last summer he published the novel Tengokude Kimini Aetara -- Tears in Heaven (If I Could See You in Heaven -- Tears in Heaven), inspired by his struggle against cancer. It has sold 150,000 copies.
Iijima and his family were featured in a TV documentary as he battled the disease.
