Sony names Stringer as next CEO
Sony Corp. on March 7 named Howard Stringer, head of its U.S. operations, as its next group CEO, becoming one of the few major Japanese firms to have a non-Japanese at the top.
The surprise announcement came as the consumer electronics and entertainment giant is under pressure to improve the profitability of its core electronics business, which has been lagging behind its rivals in digital trends.
"We will not hesitate to make tough decisions to make Sony the strongest electronics, entertainment and technology company," Stringer said at a news conference.
He said the new management will be committed to the company's plan to achieve a 10 percent operating profit margin in fiscal 2006.
In a sweeping management reshuffle, subject to shareholder approval June 22, the 63-year-old Welsh-born American will replace Nobuyuki Idei, who will step down after 10 years at the helm.
