Masako cancels Special Olympics trip

Princess Masako
Exhausted after a family skiing holiday, Crown Princess Masako canceled a trip Feb. 26 to Nagano Prefecture to attend the opening of the 2005 Special Olympics World Winter Games due to poor health, in another sign that her recovery from a stress-related disorder could take more time.

Crown Prince Naruhito attended the opening ceremony of the sports event for mentally disabled people.

It would have been the princess' first official trip outside Tokyo since November 2003.

Hideki Hayashida, grand master of the Crown Prince's Household, said the Crown Princess was not fit to travel and perform official duties.

"It is too heavy a burden on her to engage in official duties after a long trip," he said.

According to Hayashida, the 41-year-old princess visited a ski resort in Nagano Prefecture from Feb. 14 to 19, however, the trip to and from Nagano fatigued her, he said.

The Crown Princess has been largely out of public view after suffering from an adjustment disorder due to stress arising from her status and busy schedule, leading to anxiety and depression, according to the Imperial Household Agency.
