A 14-year-old girl was killed and 15 others were injured when a vehicle ran into a group of mainly junior high-school students after a relay race event in Miyanojo, Kagoshima Prefecture, on Feb. 21.
The person killed was Shiho Nagano. Thirteen victims, including Nagano, are students of Yamasaki Junior High-School in Miyanojo. The 32-year-old woman driver, a policeman and a teacher at the school were injured in the accident.
A witness said the car mowed into the students from behind at high speed and stopped after striking a utility pole.
Investigators said they would wait for the driver to recover before arresting her on suspicion of professional negligence resulting in death and injury.
