Sentence given to Fukuoka murderers

Wang Liang
On Jan. 24, the Intermediate People's Court in Liaoyang, China, handed down the death sentence to Yang Ning, 24, and sentenced Wang Liang, 22, to life imprisonment for murdering Shinjiro Matsumoto, his wife, Chika, and their children, Kai and Hina, in Fukuoka Prefecture in June 2003.

The two Chinese, who returned to China soon after the murders made national headlines in Japan, were taken into custody by Chinese authorities in August 2003 and indicted in July 2004.

Yang Ning
An accomplice, Wei Wei, 25, was arrested in Japan and is now standing trial at the Fukuoka District Court.

Harsh punishments for the two Chinese, pundits had said, could be unpopular with the Chinese public at a time when anti-Japanese sentiment is growing in the country due to Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's visits to Yasukuni Shrine.

As they did in the first hearing in October, Chinese authorities allowed members of the Japanese media to attend the court proceedings.
