NPA to get sex offenders' addresses

The Justice Ministry will provide police with the addresses of people convicted of sex crimes after their release from prison amid mounting calls to tighten surveillance on offenders, officials said Jan. 14.

The decision was prompted by the December arrest of a 36-year-old man for allegedly kidnapping and murdering a 7-year-old girl in Nara. Kaoru Kobayashi had been arrested in the past for molesting girls and served prison time for trying to kill one.

The ministry will share addresses of sex offenders after they are released from prison with the National Police Agency on condition that they not be publicized, said Satoru Ohashi of the ministry's corrections bureau.

Ohashi said the ministry and police are discussing details such as what kind of sex crimes will require information sharing.
