Hinomaru to fly during soccer game
The Japan Football Association said Jan. 14 that it has rejected a request from North Korea to omit the raising of flags and singing of national anthems in its World Cup final-round qualification match against Japan on Feb. 9.
A JFA official explained that the raising of national flags and singing of each country's anthem are conducted at World Cup qualifiers in accordance with rules stipulated by soccer's world governing body FIFA.
North Korea apparently urged FIFA to cancel the ceremonies at Saitama Stadium 2002 in a bid to avoid the raising of the Hinomaru and singing of Kimigayo at Japan's away match in Pyongyang on June 8.
