A 9-month-old Japanese boy left his home in Chile on Nov. 18 for the United States, where he will await a donor of four organs for transplant, said his supporters, who raised ¥110 million to pay for the surgery.
Yosuke Ohashi, the son of Chile-based Yukiho and Yoshie Ohashi, will wait for a donor at a Miami hospital, the supporters said.
Yosuke lost all of his small intestine as a result of a serious intestinal blockage he suffered when he was 5 months old. The surgery will involve transplanting the small intestine.
He will also undergo a liver transplant, having developed cirrhosis as a result of being administered with intravenous drips over a long period of time.
To reduce the risks of an adverse reaction, he will also receive a pancreas and stomach from the same donor, according to his supporters.
The boy's father is from Niigata Prefecture and his mother is from Osaka.
