Hu takes aim at Yasukuni visits

Hu Jintao
Chinese President Hu Jintao on Nov. 21 warned Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi that his visits to Yasukuni Shrine are the "crux" of the problem in Sino-Japanese relations.

"Hu Jintao raised the Yasukuni Shrine issue. He said in very explicit terms that the crux of the problem is that Japanese government leaders pay homage to the Yasukuni Shrine," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said after the talks.

"He said that Japanese leaders should seek a proper solution to this matter by taking history as a mirror and looking into the future."

The two leaders met after a summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Santiago, Chile.

China, occupied by Japan before and during World War II, has voiced outrage over Koizumi's regular pilgrimages to the shrine, which honors war dead, including convicted war criminals.
