Japan gets non-permanent UNSC seat
The U.N. General Assembly on Oct. 15 elected Japan and four other countries as non-permanent members of the Security Council for two-year terms beginning next January.
Argentina, Denmark, Greece and Tanzania were also elected.
Japan plans to take the opportunity of serving as a non-permanent member to intensify its bid for a permanent UNSC seat, which has been a long-term goal for the government.
"We believe this is an expression of the international community's support and expectations based on our achievements and attitude over many years," Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura said in Tokyo.
"We intend to strengthen the international community's confidence in us through fulfilling our role as a non-permanent Security Council member, fitting us to be a strong candidate for a permanent seat," he said.
