Strongest typhoon in decade hits Tokyo
The most powerful typhoon to hit eastern Japan in a decade lashed Tokyo and neighboring regions Oct. 9, leaving seven people dead and two missing while sparking transport chaos amid downpours and landslides.
Ma-on (No. 22), which means horse saddle in Cantonese, was the record ninth typhoon to reach the country's shores this year. It struck just a week after another typhoon, Meari (No. 21), wreaked havoc in southern and western regions of the country.
Meari left 22 dead, six missing presumed dead, and 89 injured in floods, landslides and other storm-triggered accidents.
