13-year-old killer's detention extended

The Nagasaki Family Court decided Sept. 27 that a 13-year-old boy who killed a 4-year-old boy in Nagasaki last year should remain under strict control at a special detention facility for one more year.

The court decided Sept. 29, 2003, to send the boy to the facility in Saitama Prefecture, which is the only one in Japan that can keep children under lock and key, for one year.

The Sept. 27 decision was made before the one-year period expired, based apparently on assessments by child consultation authorities and others that his mental and physical problems are not fully resolved.

The boy lured Shun Tanemoto away from a store July 1, 2003, molested him and then pushed him off the roof of an eight-story parking garage to his death.
