'Sky marshals' set for U.S. flights
Japan will start putting armed police officers in civilian clothing on U.S.-bound flights as an anti-terrorist measure, news reports said Sept. 12.
The National Police Agency has been training "sky marshals" and will deploy them on U.S.-bound flights of Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways by the end of the year after discussing the plan with other government ministries, the Yomiuri Shimbun and Kyodo News reported.
The step was requested by the United States in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, Kyodo said, citing police sources.
