A 13-year-old Thai girl adopted by her grandparents in Japan after her mother and father died, escaped deportation July 6, a day before her visa expired.
Bowing to public pressure, the government reversed a decision made last month to reject an appeal by the girl for a review of her case.
Mevisa Yoshida lives with her Thai grandmother, Bauchan, and the grandmother's Japanese husband in Tokyo's Arakawa Ward. She attends a local junior high school, having lived in Japan under short-stay status since February 2003.
The government will extend the permit for three months while probing to confirm that Yoshida is not a dependent of anyone in Thailand.
