Typhoon Dianmu slams Japan
At least four people died and three were missing as a result of the season's sixth typhoon, Dianmu, meaning "mother of lightning" in Chinese, whipping through western Honshu and disrupting air, land and sea travel in an extensive region, according to a Kyodo News survey and the Meteorological Agency.
More than 100 people were injured.
Typhoon Dianmu hit land near Muroto, Kochi Prefecture, on June 21 and moved north-northeast into Hyogo Prefecture before passing through Honshu into the Sea of Japan.
On June 21, more than 245 domestic flights had been canceled while train services were suspended mostly in western Japan. Road traffic was disrupted on Shikoku. Schools were closed.
