A warm hug

Yukiko Hashida and Mohamad Haytham Saleh
|
Yukiko Hashida (right), wife of the journalist Shinsuke Hashida who was shot to death in an ambush in Iraq on May 27, hugs Mohamad Haytham Saleh, a 10-year-old Iraqi boy, at a hotel in Numazu, Shizuoka Prefecture, on June 14 after Mohamad was released from a hospital there. The boy has been in Numazu for surgery on his left eye, on a trip arranged by Shinsuke and his nephew, Kotaro Ogawa, who was killed with his uncle.
According to a doctor at the hospital, the boy can continue his treatment in Iraq and should recover his eyesight in several months, when he starts using contact lenses. However, he may need to return to Japan to receive a lens implant.
The boy was injured during a battle between U.S. troops and insurgents in the city of Fallujah in November.
Mohamad smiled when Yukiko asked whether his eye was all right and kissed him on the cheek.
