LDP sweeps by-elections
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi greeted his third year in office April 26 fresh from his governing party's victory in its first electoral test since a hostage crisis challenged his commitment to the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq.
Koizumi's Liberal-Democratic Party snapped up all three Lower House vacancies in Saitama, Hiroshima and Kagoshima prefectures in by-elections April 25, in what was considered a preview of a major electoral battle looming in July in the Upper House.
The wins boost the LDP's presence in the 480-seat Lower House to 245 and its comfortable coalition majority to 279.
The outcome of the by-elections backed expectations that Koizumi's party got a big boost from his handling of the Iraq hostage crisis in April.
