Cartoonist Yokoyama dies in fire

Mitsuteru Yokoyama
Mitsuteru Yokoyama, a cartoonist known for the manga comic Tetsujin28 and other popular cartoons, died April 16 of burns suffered in a fire at his home in Toshima Ward, Tokyo. He was 69.

Yokoyama, a native of Kobe, created a series of popular cartoon characters, including Tetsujin28 and Mahotsukai Sally (Sally the Witch). In 1999, he received an award of excellence by the Japan Cartoonist Association for his Sangokushi (Romance of the Three Kingdoms).

TV Tokyo and its affiliated stations started airing the animated version of Tetsujin28 earlier this month, with the second episode aired April 16, shortly before the fatal fire. The manga will be made into a movie.

Police found an ashtray by Yokoyama's bedside and suspect the fire was caused by a cigarette.
