Seoul attack spurs safety fears
Japan said Jan. 30 that it will ask South Korea to be more vigilant about possible attacks against Japanese nationals in the country following an assault there.
On Jan. 29, a 6-year-old Japanese boy was attacked by an ax-wielding South Korean man at a school in Seoul. The boy suffered a fractured skull.
"We have to call for the full attention of the South Korean government" to prevent similar incidents, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukuda said at a news conference.
He said that Tokyo will examine whether there was adequate protection at the elementary school for Japanese children.
The kindergarten had two guards on duty.
Hiromu Takishima was seriously wounded in the attack after he got off a school bus at the school gate. Police immediately detained the suspect.
