Renho retains this portfolio and also continues in her other role as civil-service reform minister.
Renho drew notice amid her fierce battle with bureaucrats in the "shiwake" budget-screening process in 2009. She drew criticism last November after posing for a fashion magazine photo shoot inside the Diet.
Born to a Taiwanese father and Japanese mother, Renho had dual citizenship until age 18 before choosing Japanese nationality.
Renho, who only goes by her given name, debuted as "campaign girl" in 1988 when she was a student at Aoyama Gakuin University.
After being a TV host and newscaster, she entered politics in 2004 by winning an Upper House seat with the DPJ. Her husband is a freelance journalist, and the couple are raising twins, a boy and a girl.
