A graduate of the University of Tokyo, Hatoyama started his career as a secretary to Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka.
After gaining a seat in the House of Representatives in 1976, he held the posts of education and labor minister.
As justice minister, he issued execution orders for 13 death-row inmates between September 2007 and June 2008, prompting a newspaper to dub him, to his chagrin, the Grim Reaper.
Hatoyama's hobbies are studying butterflies, cooking and growing vegetables.
