Thousands escape Mogadishu violence
About 10,000 people fled the Somali capital, Mogadishu, between July 16 and 23, and the exodus sparked by fighting continues, the United Nations said.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said July 23 that even those who had returned to Mogadishu recently are heading out again, fearing for their safety.
Mogadishu has seen little peace since government troops and Ethiopian forces drove an Islamic movement out of the city in December.
Fighting in March and April forced about a fifth of Mogadishu's 2 million residents to flee for safety, and only about 125,000 have returned, the UNHCR said.
