Former prime minister arrested
Police boosted security across Bangladesh July 17 after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was jailed pending trial in an extortion case her supporters derided as politically motivated and shameful.
Riot police used batons and rubber bullets to disperse Hasina supporters in the streets of Dhaka on July 16 after she was arrested at her home in the capital in the military-backed government's anticorruption drive, said Motia Chowdhury, a leader of Hasina's Awami League.
Hasina, 59, who was prime minister from 1996 to 2001, was denied bail July 16 and ordered to be held in jail until her trial.
