Political crisis possibly over
A top aide to Ukraine's prime minister claimed May 28 that lawmakers who support rival President Viktor Yushchenko were resisting a key step toward holding Sept. 30 elections, which were agreed to resolve the country's long political crisis.
Parliament voted May 29 and May 30 on bills necessary to call the early elections, which Yushchenko and Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych agreed to in May as tension between their supporters spiraled.
Yanukovych and Yushchenko hailed the agreement as an exemplary compromise.
The agreement requires Parliament to dissolve itself; that means at least 151 of the 450 deputies have to resign.
