Priest denies having sex with Foley

A Roman Catholic priest in Malta denied he had a sexual relationship decades ago with a for mer U.S. lawmaker caught up in a scandal over sexually explicit e-mails sent to young male congressional interns, but acknowledged Oct. 19 that he sat naked in saunas with Mark Foley.

The Rev. Anthony Mercieca, speaking from his home in Malta, said a report in the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, a Florida newspaper, about their relationship was "exaggerated."

The newspaper reporter "wrote many things that I didn't say," Mercieca, 69, said. "He quotes me as saying I had one night stands with him. That's not true."

He said when he was a priest in Florida and Foley was a parishioner, the two would be naked in saunas.

"Everybody does that," Mercieca said when asked if that wasn't unusual behavior for a priest and a young boy.
