Medics on march over 'docs for oil'

In Caracas on July 16, about 400 doctors and nurses working in public hospitals protested against salaries that had remained unchanged for four years and the presence of about 20,000 higher-paid Cubans under the "Inside the Barrio" program. In exchange for their work, oil-rich Venezuela ships 90,000 barrels of oil a day to Cuba under preferential terms. Cuban President Fidel Castro has pledged to increase the number of Cuban health-care workers to more than 30,000 by the end of 2005.

Defenders of Cuban involvement accuse Venezuelan doctors of shunning poor clients, doctors accuse Chavez of neglecting public hospitals and medical school professor Dr. Ivan Machado said medical students aren't being hired because there are so many Cubans. "I have doubts about the professional capacity of the alleged Cuban doctors," he added.
