Mainstream Muslims attack sect

A mob of more than 1,000 Muslims attacked the headquarters of the Ahamadiyah sect in the town of Bogor, south of Jakarta, on July 15. They hurled stones at the sect's followers, denounced as heretics by mainstream Muslim groups around the world, as outnumbered police escorted them from the complex.

Ahamadiyah was formed in Pakistan in the 19th century. Its followers say the group's founder, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, was a prophet who came after Muhammad, whom mainstream Muslims believe was God's final messenger. Its followers face discrimination and bans by Islamic authorities. It claims 200,000 adherents, but the state has never tried to forcefully disband it or arrest its followers.

"Ahamadiyah's teachings are against Islam," said Din Syamsuddin, secretary-general of the religious council. "But the attack against Ahamadiyah is also against Islam."
