Ailing Arafat leaves for Paris

Yasser Arafat

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat flew to Paris for treatment of a serious illness Oct. 29, breaking free from nearly three years of Israeli-imposed confinement at his battered West Bank compound in Ramallah, after receiving assurances from his longtime enemy, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, that he would be allowed to return.
Arafat's somber departure -- a few hundred loyalists gathered on a rain-slicked tarmac -- stood in marked contrast to his triumphant arrival in the Palestinian lands a decade ago, when he held out the promise of statehood.
Arafat has been ill for several weeks and blood tests have revealed that he has a low platelet count, which could indicate that the 75-year-old is suffering from leukemia.
