Automakers resume production
Almost all automakers said July 23 they will partially resume domestic production after key auto parts supplier Riken Corp. restarted operations for the first time since it was hit by an earthquake in Niigata Prefecture on July 16.
The auto industry has experienced its largest cutback in production following the quake, with Toyota Motor Corp. expecting to temporarily lose output of about 55,000 vehicles mainly due to difficulties in procuring engine parts from Riken.
Among all 12 Japanese automakers, the loss of output is likely to total more than 110,000 units, much higher than the previous record loss of about 40,000 units at the time of the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake.
