New pension bill finalized
The government on March 13 finalized a bill to abolish the scandal-tainted Social Insurance Agency and transfer its national pension functions to a new pension entity in January 2010 to streamline related operations.
The bill, adopted at a Cabinet meeting for submission to the Diet and apparently aimed at promoting Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's reformist image, also highlights an addition of credit cards to the method of premium payments for the first time as part of an effort to increase payments.
Abe's administration and the governing coalition parties eye its passage during the current Diet session.
