Police began a full-scale investigation on Feb. 13 near a U.S. military base in Zama, Kanagawa Prefecture, following two explosions late Feb. 12 they believe were an attack on the installation. ABC News reported that this may be the first attempt by the al-Quaida network to launch an attack in Japan.
The investigation focused on the woods on the west side of Zamayatoyama Park, near Camp Zama. Two metal tubes believed to be launchers were discovered there. The police were also looking for launched objects.
