Marines conduct drills amid protest
The U.S. Marine Corps conducted a parachute drill Feb. 13 in waters off its Camp Schwab in Nago, Okinawa Prefecture, as some 40 local residents in boats held a protest demonstration.
In the exercise, 22 Marines parachuted to the sea between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m., officials at the Naha Defense Facilities Administration Bureau said.
The Okinawa Prefectural Government had asked for the drill to be canceled, saying parachute training should be done at an auxiliary airfield on Ie Island, Okinawa Prefecture, in line with a 1996 agreement of the Japan-U.S. Special Action Committee on Okinawa.
The facilities administration agency has argued that drills off Nago are exempt from the agreement.
