Whaling, environmental ship collide
A Japanese whaling ship and a vessel of an environmental group collided in the Antarctic Ocean off New Zealand on Feb. 12, the Japanese Fisheries Agency and the conservation group said, with both sides blaming each other for the incident.
The accident caused damage to both the 860.25-ton whaler Kaiko Maru operated by the Institute of Cetacean Research and the Robert Hunter of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, the agency and the environmental group separately said.
Japan also took a new step toward achieving its long-held wish of resuming commercial whaling by hosting an international conference beginning Feb. 13 to discuss how to "normalize" the International Whaling Commission originally set up to benefit the whaling industry.
