The 19th Tokyo International Film Festival kicked off for a nine-day run Oct. 21 with 15 movies competing for top prizes.
Movie stars walked the red carpet at Roppongi Hills, one of the two main venues, and Clint Eastwood's World War II epic Flags of Our Fathers opened the festival.
The opening ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
The festival features movies made at home and abroad.
