Royal celebrates 72 years
Empress Michiko marked her 72nd birthday Oct. 20, saying she had been extremely worried over her daughter-in-law Princess Kiko's pregnancy complications and hoped that Kiko's son, Prince Hisahito, would grow up strong.

Hisahito's birth to Kiko and Prince Akishino, second son of the Empress and Emperor Akihito, on Sept. 6 forestalled a succession crisis for the Chrysanthemum Throne, which was in need of a new male heir.
Kiko was hospitalized Aug. 16 after showing symptoms of partial placenta previa, in which part of the placenta drops too low in the uterus.
The Empress said at her annual birthday news conference that she "became extremely worried" when she first read about the condition.
