NHK gets abductions prod

The government will ask a state panel on radio broadcasting to discuss next month whether to order Japan Broadcasting Corp., the country's public broadcaster better known as NHK, to feature North Korea's abductions of Japanese nationals in its overseas shortwave radio broadcasts.

The move, announced by Internal Affairs and Communications Minister Yoshihide Suga on Oct. 24, raised concerns among lawmakers that such an order would violate freedom of press and is likely to ignite further heated debate.

Suga told a news conference that he is eyeing requiring NHK to air broadcast items "keeping the abduction issue in mind" and said the instruction will be given to the Radio Regulatory Council at its Nov. 8 meeting.
