Gyudon makes triumphant return

Customers eat gyudon in a Yoshinoya restaurant on Sept. 18 in Yurackucho, Tokyo.

Customers waited hours at Yoshinoya restaurants Sept. 18 to savor the return of gyudon, a rice dish topped with beef that was off the menu for more than two years due to a ban on the import of U.S. beef.
"It was delicious because I hadn't had it in a while," said construction worker Hiroaki Kaneko, who was among the first to eat a beef bowl, and took out four for his coworkers.
Yoshinoya, which runs 1,000 restaurants nationwide, couldn't bring the beef bowl back before the day billed as "Resurrection Festival for the Beef Bowl" because of difficulties in getting a sufficient supply of meat.
