At least nine killed in Typhoon Shanshan

Strong winds brought by Typhoon Shanshan overturned an empty car ferry in southwestern Japan on Sept. 18, killing one crew member.

A train lies blown over in Miyazaki Prefecture on Sept. 17.
The death brought the toll from the storm to at least nine dead or missing since it first hit Japanese territory Sept. 16, blowing cars over in the streets. More than 260 people were injured, and thousands sought refuge in public shelters.

The ferry, which was being tugged by a cargo ship for delivery to the Maldive Islands, overturned in waters near the southwestern city of Saiki, Oita Prefecture, sending its five crew members into the sea.

A father and his teenage daughter died Sept. 16 when their car was hit by a flash flood in Kyushu. Another man was swept away in high waters elsewhere.

Another man was killed and another is missing in Hiroshima Prefecture, farther to the east.

More than 100 others have been injured by the storm, which entered Japanese waters after sweeping past Taiwan.

Five people were hurt when two cars in the train they were riding in tipped off the tracks in Miyazaki Prefecture. The train was going slow because of the typhoon and a sudden gust lifted it from the rails.

More than 100 were injured when gusts of wind blew through the town of Nobeoka, also in Miyazaki, shattering windows, overturning vehicles and ripping down parts of buildings.

Japan Airlines and its subsidiary canceled a total 44 flights Sept. 18, the company said on its Web site. All Nippon Airways canceled 31 flights on the same day.
