The Meteorological Agency upgraded the status of a volcano in Kagoshima Prefecture to level 3, or "active," from level 2, or "moderate," on its 6-level scale of volcanic activity.
The Showa vent on Mount Sakurajima has erupted several times since June 7. There were no reports of damage or injuries.
In 2000, an eruption at a volcano on Miyakejima, one of the Izu islands about 180 km east of Tokyo, forced all 4,000 residents to evacuate.
