A bill for legislation allowing Tokyo to impose economic sanctions on North Korea cleared the Diet on June 13. Sanctions could be imposed if Pyongyang fails to make progress on its human rights situation, especially its abductions of Japanese nationals.
Chaired by Katsuei Hirasawa, the Lower House special committee on abduction issues skipped its deliberations and proposed the bill directly at a plenary session, which means the measure could be enacted before the current Diet session ends.
The bill was sponsored by the governing coalition of the Liberal-Democratic Party and New Komeito plus the main opposition Democratic Party of Japan after they agreed June 8 to unify the bills they had separately submitted to the Diet for similar legislation.
