Mob-linked diplomat unwelcome
In a rare move, the Foreign Ministry has designated a diplomat from the Cote d'Ivoire Embassy persona non grata in connection with a room in Tokyo that was rented out in his name for use as a yakuza-run illicit gambling den, sources said April 5.
The diplomat, who left Japan in late March, is suspected of receiving around ¥40 million for allowing his name to be used to rent the room, according to investigators from the Metropolitan Police Department's organized crime squad.
The squad believes the operators of the gambling den -- a baccarat pit set up in an office complex in the upscale Minami-Azabu district of Minato Ward -- plotted to evade detection by taking advantage of the man's diplomatic immunity, the sources said.
