Economy takes off in 4th quarter
The economy grew at a stunning 5.5 percent annual pace in the fourth quarter of 2005, the government said Feb. 17, indicating a convincing recovery is under way.
Soaring car exports and solid consumer spending propelled growth in the October-December period as people shopped for flat-panel televisions and portable music players, Fumikazu Hida of the Cabinet Office said.
For all of 2005, the economy grew 2.8 percent, the best showing since 2000, when it expanded 2.9 percent.
