The U.S. military turned over to police Jan. 7 a U.S. sailor suspected of robbing and killing a Japanese woman in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture.
The United States agreed to transfer the suspect, William O. Reese, 21, after the Kanagawa Prefectural Police obtained a warrant for his arrest.
According to police sources, Reese admitted Jan. 6 to Japanese police to killing Yoshie Sato, 56, on Jan. 3. The sources said that Reese told investigators he asked Sato for change so he could take a taxi, but that he was angry and beat her after she pushed him away.
Authorities say Reese fatally beat and robbed Sato of about ¥15,000 on a Yokosuka street near the U.S. Navy base 45 km southwest of Tokyo.
